The framing of 'optimization amplifies direction, constraints preserve command' is precise. Most AI deployments optimize for performance without building in stop conditions or human override mechanisms, which is why drift accumulates silently. The observation that systems can behave exactly as designed and stil create surprise nails the issue. In practise, mature systems should optimize for maximum tolerable risk rather than maximum performance, but thats almost never how procurement or deployment incentives are structured.
