Bias Isn’t Just in the Code: It’s in the Culture
Every time a news story breaks about an AI system gone wrong - an algorithm mislabeling faces, a hiring bot filtering out women, a predictive tool targeting communities of color - the response is almost always the same: “The algorithm is biased.”
But here’s the uncomfortable truth: bias isn’t just in the code. It’s in the culture that creates it.
Where Does Bias Begin?
Most people think of algorithmic bias as a technical glitch - something developers can fix with better data or smarter math. And yes, flawed datasets and poor model design do cause bias. But focusing only on the code misses the bigger picture.
Bias starts long before a single line of Python is written.
It starts in who gets hired to build the system.
